Summer Opera Workshop for young professionals.
Summer Opera Workshop is a two-week intensive course that intentionally challenges singers to move beyond the practice room and onto the stage. It is an opportunity to develop stage craft as well as receive intensive music coaching, vocal technique classes and also spend time networking with fellow aspiring young professionals. The course concludes with a finale showcase performance. Participants work on arias and ensembles from a variety of Operas and Musicals specifically choosen to suit both the individual voices and group as a whole. During 2013 we focused on Le Nozze di Figaro and in 2014, Die Zauberflte but other scenes have included; Tosca, Die Fledermaus, Carmen, The Secret Garden, Rigoletto and La Bohème.
Seldom have I seen a workshop with such well directed and innovative on stage energy. The audience was mesmerized. My students thoroughly enjoyed participating in this workshop simply because both the vocal and dramatic aspects of opera production were meticulously addressed in a manner that was both challenging and fun. I highly recommend this workshop to singers aspiring to operatic careers. It succeeds in helping singers step outside of their performer's 'box' and see what it is really like to be on stage

While it certainly was a great opportunity to practice audition arias in front of a discerning audience, I especially appreciated the acting coaching which is so essential for emerging singers. For a long time I have struggled with the pacing of Porgi Amor, but after the workshop, I feel much better equipped to energise the whole aria from an endless intro into final notes with concentration and emotion. I enjoyed the chance to commune with other singers and it was wonderful to share time, scenes, ambition and goals with other young professionals.
